West Ham were dumped out of the Capital One Cup after losing 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in normal time.
In a game in which the Irons should have sewn up after creating many chances, they were left to rue those squandered – many of those missed by £12m signing Enner Valencia on his first start for the club.
West Ham started the game brightly and continued to dominate and create during the first half. And on 40 minutes were rewarded when new signing Sakho nearly headed home a Mo Diame cross.
After the break however Sheffield United turned the tables, and began to cause the West Ham defence problems.
The Blades equalised on 58 minutes thanks to a Winston Reid own goal, and from then on it looked like West Ham were in for a long night.
The game went onto extra time, and thanks for some fine defending by Sheffield United the Hammers were denied time and again, but sadly penalties awaited.
The shootout finished 5-4 in favour of the Blades, following just one miss – from Enner Valencia.
Although it’s a frustrating result, West Ham have bigger fish to fry this season, and they’ll be hoping to get back to winning ways this Saturday at home to Southampton.
