The views of most from last nights 1-0 victory in our round 2 Europa League clash with Birkirkara were simply frustration, and although I understand where they’re coming from, we need a dose of reality here.
Although it was a competitive game for the club, it was also a pre season friendly – in a way. Slaven Bilic deployed a pretty much 2nd string side that clearly were going through the motions of running off the beer and burgers of their summer holidays.
What was important is that victory was secured, no big injuries were felt, and our fringe players got their match fitness up and a chance to impress the new man in charge.
What was alarming for me was the fact most of those players were playing for their Irons careers in front of the new boss, yet showed exactly why they are our fringe players.
Matt Jarvis and Kevin Nolan are men at the end. I believe their time is up as the club are looking to hand them over to QPR as part of the package to secure the services of Charlie Austin.
Morgan Amalfitano was absent, in fact I forgot he was on the pitch for most of the game. When considering the competition for places in our midfield now, is worrying.
Maiga once again showed why the club are so desperate to cut the their losses and get rid. Apart from hitting the post, the man looked so out of his depth it was comedy.
Slaven Bilic now sees that our side simply doesn’t have a depth to rely upon. The only players that showed their worth were first team shouters Noble, Cresswell, Reid, Tomkins and Adrian. Apart from the lively Samuelson, the rest looked Championship standard.
But let’s be positive. We won. We are a club on the up and once that first team of players are on that pitch it will be a very different story I’m sure
