Following last nights scrappy, through on the skin of our teeth victory against Birkirkara in the Europa League, one thing that stood out apart from our naivety abroad was our desperate need for a top striker.
Yes, Diafro Sakho was missing due to suspension, but the displays of Mauro Zarate and Modibo Maiga were those of players who cannot be relied upon. This isn’t news to anyone. These are Championship strikers.
Some sympathy must be given to the players having to cope with the heat last night, and it was clear that we were a side struggling with that obstacle – but the performances of some were poor.
Charlie Austin is a player certain to leave relegated QPR this summer, and West Ham must realise that this player is a must-buy for us. He would add the fire power and quality our front line so desperately needs.
Rumours are still rife that we are amongst the pack of clubs interested in signing him – however I would say that we need to now start making formal moves to sign following last night.
The Premier League curtain raiser against Arsenal is only a mere 3 weeks away, and although our summer purchasing has been excellent, we need Charlie Austin adding.
