It’s always nice to wake up the morning after a victory. It’s like for a moment winning the match all over again – recounting the moments of the game in the shower. But there is something different about our win over Newcastle last night – we are actually starting to look like a decent Premier League side.
I know people will say don’t get carried away, and maybe we shouldn’t – especially after our season of two halves in the previous campaign. But how can we not get excited? West Ham now have a fantastic squad of players.
Not just a squad who could cope with a survival battle, but one who can compete for a place in the top half.
We have a manager that wants us to play, and players capable of playing. The upgrade in quality is evident, and on our day now we are capable of beating anybody – including Man City on Saturday.
Yes yes I know I’m probably getting ahead of myself here, but why not? We’ve swept aside Arsenal and Liverpool with ease already away from home this season, so why not an upset for the current league leaders?
The Newcastle performance from the whole side was outstanding, minus the nervy first half from our new captain Mark Noble – we never looked in danger. We swept aside the Magpies making it look easy. Some reports this morning are suggesting that Newcastle were poor – but I disagree.
In my opinion Newcastle actually put in a decent shift, and had it not been for our excellent focus and determination, the score line would have looked a lot different.
Dimitri Payet was the star of the show once again, scoring two, and putting in a performance displaying exactly why he was Slaven Bilics top target this summer.
New season long loanee Victor Moses also deserves a special mention – he was excellent.
What I’m getting at is – take nothing away from our performance last night. We were outstanding, and fully deserved the 3 points. So let’s enjoy the fact we’ve won back to back Premier League games, one which was played at Anfield, and soak up the plaudits.
Let’s hope that this feeling becomes more common.
