With the January transfer window in full swing it is widely expected that such rubbish rumours will be touted by the press, but today’s gossip of Daniel Sturridge to West Ham for £18m surely takes the biscuit.
It’s a wonder that this was ever printed – full stop. Let alone be picked up by newspapers around the world as something credible.
Who is the ‘source’ in this one? I must ask.
A load of nonsense.
Why on earth would our club, who are clearly on the rise to success, waste a penny, let alone millions of pounds, on a man who’s current club have only just recently admitted ‘we don’t know what’s wrong with him’.
It wouldn’t even be a gamble. This would be a guaranteed financial disaster.
I don’t think there are too many of us fans who have read into this rumour, and I for one found it more comedy gold than something to actually consider credible.
However the likely soon to be announced capture of Leeds United right back Sam Byram is one that is not only credible, but makes sense for our club.
This move very much echoes that of the signing of Aaron Cresswell from Ipswich Town 2 seasons ago, with Byram matching Cresswell as the current must-have championship player.
Byram will be expected to step up, and fill the void of the soon to depart Carl Jenkinson, who will head back to Arsenal in May. And if he can be half as excellent as Cresswell, then it’s a good piece of business as far as I am concerned.
As for the striker rumour … I shall enjoy like most, watching this one unfold.
